To begin with this French recipe in France…
I can still remember the first time I tasted burrata cheese here in France. Previously, it simply looked like gourmet mozzarella cheese, all until I experienced it on a pizza. It happened when I took my daughter out for some mommy-daughter time to a pizza place. We decided to split a gourmet pizza to which there was arugula on top of the cheese along with the big creamy ball of burrata in the center. The experience of this arugula burrata pizza was something we will never forget.
It’s been 3 years ago now, and we still drool over this pizza perfection. Because making homemade pizza dough is time consuming for my personality of French Cuisine Made Simple, I set out to find a recipe that mimics that unforgettable arugula burrata pizza, yet in a salad. Et voilà, the French arugula burrata salad with fresh tomatoes and homemade vinaigrette recipe was found!

What is burrata cheese et what does it taste like?
As much as France is the king of cheese, I have to give “kudos” to the Italians for this cheese. Burrata cheese is similar to mozzarella cheese, however when you cut into it, that’s when the oh là là happens.
The outer cheese layer is firmer and on the inside is where the creamy soft cheese curds slowly spills on your plate. How satisfying! Burrata cheese is delicate and a little luxurious, making it perfect for this French arugula burrata salad in all its glory!

Your questions answered…
Where can I buy burrata?
In the U.S. you can find burrata in your local grocery store when looking near the fresh mozzarella or specialty cheese section. In France, you can find it in any cheaper or larger grocery store.
What can I use as a burrata substitute?
Although this arugula salad with burrata is crowned with the burrata cheese, fresh mozzarella cheese or ricotta cheese is still a great substitute. The creamy, milky flavor matches well with burrata as an excellent alternative.
Can you freeze burrata?
Just like any cheese, it’s possible to freeze it. The only down side for burrata, is that it’s not recommended if you want to enjoy it’s signature creamy texture. Because it’s a delicate cheese, it’s best eaten fresh, especially in any burrata cheese salad.
How to store this arugula burrata salad?
- The French arugula salad with burrata is best enjoyed fresh and right away.
- Any left overs, can be stored in an airtight container in the frig for up to a day. The arugula and burrata salad is “moist” which will make the arugula soggy, so the longer it sits the less fresh it becomes.
Is burrata healthy?
Yes! But like every food, it’s best in moderation, which will be difficult because the burrata is just the “luxury” in this burrata arugula salad. Burrata cheese has protein, calcium and vitamin B12, along with healthy fats and rich creamy texture.
